So that's why I wear a helmet!

I got attacked by a magpie on the way home today, near cnr Kensington Rd and Bogan St, Summer Hill. It's getting to that time of the year.

Rode from North Turramurra today, it was magic, the spring flowers are blooming and the birds were singing. The sun was shining as I was riding. I am carrying extra weight over the winter but it was worth pushing it up Bobbin head hills. Round trip of 32km today but will increase distance for next Wednesday. Continue

My week day rides.

Headed out on a cold Wednesday morning after school drop off.

Parked at Terry Hills and took my beautiful Pinarello Prince for a ride to Akuna Bay. Took photos down near the water. It was like glass. The boats looked inviting for a sail and cruise. Continued up the long but steady hill to West Head turn off. What awaited me was a rollercoaster of hills for 12km (Total ride 50km) to the point where the view is majestic and euphoric , I call it God's earth from heaven. Took some pictures of… Continue

On Contador being "unprofessional"

I ended up in a conversation on Twitter today with Weiyun and Simon Sharwood. I didn't get to finish what I had to say, and it really requires a little more than 140 characters so I decided to write a blog post.

At issue is that Contador was "unprofessional" for attacking… Continue

2nd hand fixie

I'm after a very cheap, old, crappy (not necessarily road worthy), fixed gear or single speed bike. It's basically to be permanently attached to the stationery trainer / rollers so I don't have to keep changing the wheels on my track and road bike. Complete or part there of, I would be interested in. Obviously not looking to spend a lot of cash. Problem is - I'm short (153cm), so I would likely fit on a kids bike. Anyone know anyone that has some old parts or small bike they want to get ride… Continue

Couriers going mainstream

This morning on Play School the story was about a bicycle courier, he was riding a Gofa with a basket and had a GPS to show him where to go.
He even had a song 'riding along, singing my courier song, riding along, singing my song'.

My kids who love bikes really enjoyed the story and I guess it's introducing bikes to a lot of kids who may not have them in their house or see them day to day..... or are they just taking the cool out of the courier trend? - no fixies here! ;-)

The difference 6 months makes

On Saturday I returned to Tempe Velodrome for some club racing. By chance I was able to borrow a car and dust off my track bike that has been looking at me with disappointed eyes for so long. It was the first time I'd raced in 6 months and quite a revelation for me in terms of accessing my own fitness. Since moving over to the socalled 'wrong' side of the bridge in March, I hadn't been out on any hard sunday morning training rides with Dulwich… Continue

Congrats from Vancouver, BC, Canada

Hi Sydney Cyclists

Congratulations on your membership achievement from Vancouver, BC, Canada,

and from MOMENTUM magazine ( www.momentumplanet.com ).

Perhaps you can share our greetings with the cyclists at your party.

And by all means have a look at MOMENTUM -- it is available free online at the website above.

Might be interesting to have something from you for the magazine if someone could put a brief item together -- preferably with a… Continue

Of flats, pumps, sag wagons and smart arses

Well on the weekend just past I suffered an annoying little episode. Being one of the most capable riders from our BUG / cycling group the Western Sydney Cycling Network (WSCN) I generally always end up with the role of the 'tailgun charlie' or the sweep rider. Works on the principle if I have to stop etc its quite easy for me to catch up.

This created my lovely little problem on sunday morning. I managed to pick up a bit of glass in my front tyre and got myself a puncture. I'd… Continue

Tour climbs explained

In another thread, Kylie was questioning the definition of Hors Categorie and Neil stepped in to explain the "beyond category" climbs in the tour.

I thought I'd post the best explaination I've found.

You take a Citroen 2CV (See below) and try to drive it up the climb. If it will do it in 4th gear, it's a 4th category climb. If you need to put it in third, it's a category three and so on. If it won't get up the mountain at all, it's a Hors Categorie climb.

Hope… Continue

Cavendish Wins!

So in our house I do night shift with the kids and DamianM usually does the early morning shift. Lately it's been good because he can catch up on any TdF footage that he'd been too tired for the night before. This morning I got up to see the three of them watching last night's stage and really talking about it, it's not the first time so I didn't think too much of it - Dad was explaining to Miles what was happening with the breakaway and who was in the peloton etc and Miles was lamenting that… Continue

Tour predictions

I spent some time tonight putting together my team for Tony's Fantasy TdF league and got to thinking about what I think is going to happen this year.

It's a bit of a wildcard tour, last years winner is on a new team without Bjarne's rat cunning. The obvious favourites are on Astana, but that just looks like a team ready to explode. If the management don't do it first, then will Contador get held back… Continue

Running Red Lights

I just want to make my position very clear - its NOT OK to run red lights. I was driving my truck through Brighton le Sands this morning around 7.45am. I passed a group of about 10 cyclists heading south on the 3 lane main road and I came to a stop at the red light in the main shopping strip. I watched in my rear view mirror as the bunch approached the red light and then proceeded to ride - all 10 of them - straight through it.

10 humans on bicycles is about the same spacial size as… Continue

The power of saying "Sorry."

A busy week on the road thanks to the end of the financial year.

Relatively incident free...

Except for two occasions.

1. A ute driving P plater picking up a trailer from 55market (The lights from the opening of the Bruno movie).

Pretty sure its illegal to carry a trailer while on your P's but thats not the problem... The problem is he didn't look when he ran onto the road to open his car door.

The response to my "Watch out!" was "Get… Continue

I got called a d*ckhead tonight

Riding home through peak hour traffic today, I was called a d*ckhead by another cyclist.

For sure, I was going through a red light - into an intersection that was completely gridlocked. I slowed down rather unexpectedly during this manoeuvre, as a car I was expecting to move forward didn't.

Evidently in so doing I got in the way of another cyclist coming through on green, who shot straight through in a left-turn only lane before mounting the footpath at some… Continue
