Thanks to a good hard rubbish find on the weekend, and a bolt of lightning, my trash-bike* fixie is finally finished. With the body of 1977 Raleigh Grand Prix, the head of a hybrid, and the webbed cranks of an 80s roadie it is a strange beast but a pleasure to ride.

I've survived a couple of commutes to the train station and so far the fixed experience has been as much fun as I expected and not nearly as terrifying. There have been a…

Went on the annual LBUG
WWW ride, from Windsor to Wyong via Wiseman's Ferry. Day 1 was fine and very cool, with a fresh tail wind.14 riders set off from Windsor station at 930 am and made excellent time to the Sackville ferry, via Ebernezer. Across the mighty Hawkesbury and up the hill to the Lower Portland turnoff. Lunch was a spot

by the road overlooking the river, not far from…

How many cyclists on this site ride tandems, I wonder. Should there be a tandem group to discuss everything tandemic? Perhaps. I am musing upon this subject after completing a very enjoyable 60km jaunt with my regular stoker, Andrew, on Sunday.
It was one of those crisp but shiny and bright Sunday mornings on the northern beaches with less than usual traffic. Maybe all that Olympics watching had tired out the otherwise early drivers who were catching up on their shut-eye instead.…

What makes it cool is that you can use the bike separately, the stroller separately, or the two together.

Well the Long Haul Trucker has arrived. The baby is a couple of weeks old but we have spent some time getting to know each other before showing her off to the world.
Of note - Tilly loves her baby seat and is really enjoying riding, the basket is rocking and Dave's touch, the bell (blue with stars), is spectacular! It sounds like a doorbell - it's the Ding Dong, too cool!
Other features, low mountain bike gearing so I can…

We know it's not a competition. This Sydney/Melbourne rivalry is just so much hype. No truth to it at all.
But...
We have to note that the Sydney Cyclist site (316 members) is (still) streets ahead of the Melbourne Cyclist site (247 members) as of this morning. Sydney Cyclist is powering towards the gold, even though one of our leading riders has taken a nasty tumble. (Bodies heal but that square wheel is gonna slow D down, so time for the rest of the team to share the…

No really, I was.... and my wheel just locked up, collapsed on itself and cracked in half.
Next thing I know I'm on the ground with skin missing on my arm.
Well that's one way of looking at it, I think an alternate version might make more sense.
So the alternate version is I was sprinting off some lights to beat the cars, and headed into a sharp left hand turn at speed. On the fixie. I'm guessing I ground the pedal on the road, I've been riding my road bike a…

A while ago I registered my workplace for ride to work day. We are well equiped for riding to work. We have a good secure bike room (you have to use your swipe card to get in and it is under CCTV). We are close to the Cooks River/Bay to Bay cyclepath. We have a locker room complete with showers. Cyclists get a locker for their uniforms etc and toiletries. We have a small group of regulars who commute by bike, as well as a few who ride in occasionally (they ride in regulary but occasionally have…

Went for a ride on Sunday. One of my favourites, Waterfall to Cronulla via Otford and Bundeena.
see Bikely map The 8.40 am Wollongong train gets to Waterfall pretty promptly (9.22) and the Millenium carriages, if not actually designed to take bikes, are spacious and bikes fit easily in the area off the vestibule.
At Waterfall we met more of our group (LBUG) that had ridden all the way from Tempe - the keen…

Second race ever. Heffron park, this saturday just past.
On Advice from an experience heffron campaigner, i head to the front early to have a token turn in the lead. As i go to make my way to the back for a rest, a 3 man breakaway goes at the pimples and i foolishy (i now realise) chased them down. I was hoping to make it a 4 man breakaway but alas the pack came with us. After that effort i slowly started to make my way to the back but the pace never slowed. After 4 laps the avergage…

Since bad cycling infrastructure seems to be a leitmotif of sydneycyclist, I thought I might share my own anecdote.
I meet up with a lady from Hornsby this morning to talk about her idea for developing a
fietsstalling bike parking facility at the train station. On my way back from Hornsby to Macquaire uni I thought I might
survey a few more train stations to see what bike parking facilities existed in that area. As I…

You have to wonder whether bike path designers really deserve whatever it is they are paid. Or is it a case of paying peanuts and getting monkeys? It could just be that the RTA, as the responsible authority, has no real interest in cyclists (surely that can't be??) and believes that we will be happy with whatever scraps we are thrown.
Members of this site have already canvassed a number of deficiencies of the new Gore Hill Fwy/Epping Rd shared path. Many of these have related to user…

Hi All
Been considering buying a hub-geared bike until I read
here and in
Richard's 21st Century Bicycle book, that hub gear systems lose up to half the pedalling energy a rider puts out.
Anyone here who can compare notes? I'm not wedded to the idea of a hub-geared bike but that has turned…

Today while surfing the net looking at some of the interstate bicycle organisations I came across www.greataustralianbikeride.org.au The idea of a ride around Australia is great, in fact it is as the title of the blog post says, something I have always wanted to do. To make it even better there it is for agood cause, something I have always been a soft touch for.
However given I have a limited funds and a limited amount of leave on hands I am torn between putting myself in for the stage…

The bike path from South St to Brodie St in Rydalmere is finally open.
Instead of battling the horror of the Victoria Rd rail overpass, and Jame Ruse Dve intersections, I can now enjoy a meander through the UWS campus and the back streets of Rydalmere.
A map and a photo…
