Some day are diamonds (apologies to John Denver)

Some days are diamonds some days are stones

Sometimes the headwind won't leave me alone

Sometimes a cold wind blows a chill in my toes

Some days are diamonds some days are stones.

Ok, so I have a bizarre internal soundtrack on my commute- this one seems to come up fairly frequently.

It started me wondering- what is it that makes one ride seem so much easier than another one? I'm talking about commuting here, the route that generally has only minor variations each… Continue

Testing a Garmin 500 bike computer

I tested my legs, my lungs and a new Garmin 500 Edge computer this weekend, on a couple of great national park rides in Sydney.

Error of judgement

Sometimes, I make mistakes whilst cycling. Not often (or at least I like to think so), but this morning was one of those days when I did. As a result I ended up sprawled on the road in front of a whole bunch of people, which was all rather embarrassing.

I do reflect on the things I do that were perhaps a bit ill advised in order to learn from them. And I thought by posting this you can either 'tut tut' at me, laugh at me or learn with me, as you see…

Bike on bike action

I went away two weekends ago weekend (I was playing at the Dubbo Jazz Festival, which was lots of fun), so went to the airport directly from work on Friday night. This meant my bike stayed in the office all weekend. I of course road to work on Monday on a different machine, and then ended up with two bikes at work.

This continued for a whole week; I rotated the bikes around (including having a fun day where I rode the fixie to work, then later in the day rode the tourer to… Continue

Gay bicycle?

I trained it to Thornleigh today with my Dahon Eco 3 folding. It was a beautiful sunny morning. Was a quick trip considering I had to catch the train from Lidcombe to Strathfield, change and go to Hornsby and then change again and get off at Thornleigh.

As I got off the train and put my bike down on the platform a guy that was sitting near the door advised me that he thought my bike was…

Sex on the streets...

I was cycling home from work on Thursday through the back streets of Mosman and I came to a section of road which I did not feel safe on so I turn onto the footpath. I was cycling along very slowly, probably about 10kph.

Ahead of me I could see that on the left side of the path was a wooden fence and on the right a metal fence was starting (making the footpath…

Riding the Harbour Bridge

We chattering cappuccino classes of the inner west don't often ride towards the North Shore - so I was pleasantly surprised when I did it yesterday. A few snags, but it's improving. Keep up the good work, Clover!

No seriously! What will the NSW Liberal/National coalition do for cycling when they get into office next year?

Thus far we have had 2 premiers of NSW who have put up what some would say are token efforts to cycling (Nathan Rees& Kristina Kenneally). I seem to remember the Liberals put up at least 1 candidate in Balmain who tried to make a zero emissions campaign and did a lot of work cycling to meetings etc - but I have forgotten his name!

Given that from what most polls predict it is unlikely the current government are going to be in office this time next year and the impression that most…

The long road to Brisvegas 5

Hey all,
It's been a massive couple of weeks, a bit less training than I would have liked (Yes I am a sook about riding in the rain and badly need to take a leaf out of choppers book hardness), so with a week of rain ahead the trainer will be getting a work out. It was great seeing everyone at the rally for SCC bike infrastructure, lots of smiling faces and honking :)

One of the things I did recently that has made a huge difference is a basic bike…

European Tour: Klausen Pass in Switzerland

On the last day of my cycling holiday in Europe, I decided to challenge myself with a Swiss mountain pass. The Klausen Pass was in the Tour of Switzerland in 2008 and was climbed (in the opposite direction) in just over an hour by the eventual winner of the tour, Roman Kreuziger…

Sunday ride #2

This afternoon I had a Big Band rehearsal over in Lane Cove. Normally I drive, but Mrs Dan was using the car. The perfect opportunity to try it on the radish!

I had been meaning to do this since my last trombone expedition. That journey was very short, however - how would I fare on a longer ride, along what is perhaps the least… Continue

I made a near fatal mistake and it wasn't me at risk.

Driving out tonight to pick up my daughter from art class I very nearly t-boned a cyclist.

I was driving along a residential street in Stanmore approaching a roundabout. It was dark and I was on the lookout for headlights. In hindsight it would seem the cyclist's headlight did not meet my "lookout for headlights" criteria.

I didn't see the cyclist until I was entering the roundabout and he was approaching from my right. I braked hard…

Cycling and the elections

I was wondering if bicycle NSW will put on their website a grade for each political party racing in the elections in regards to their approach to cycling as means of transport.
