Track World Cup ticket going begging!

Hi all, I've a general admission ticket for the World Cup tonight (Friday) going begging.
All my bike buddies/family/mates have had to cancel.
Sponsors gave it to me so free as a bird.
Oh and if anyone else will be there tonight, wanna meetup?

Bikes Rock opening party

Well I managed to get myself invited to the Film festival opening party last night (Thanks Adam!). What a fun night. I met a couple of members of the site, ran into some old friends, talked bikes and generally had a good time.

We got to see a preview of some of the films screened outside in the parking lot too.

I was going to take some pics, but I found that it helps to check the battery on your camera more than 4 minutes before you walk out the door. Nevermind, there were… Continue

Cowan to Hunter Valley Bikely Route just posted

Has anyone actually done this ride? Generally it doesn't look too bad except for the apparently huge climb about 27 k in. Now last year I did the Century ride at Mt Penang in May, though I only did the 50k not the 100. There was a big climb in that. I'm wondering if its the same climb I see in this Bikely Route.

Happy to hear of anyone who's gone to the Hunter on such a ride.

Hills that aren't hills

A couple of years back, when my bike was new and I was new to riding it, I noticed pretty fast that there were some hills that didn't bother me. I was strong enough (and the hill was short enough) that I could get up it without gear changes or feeling like I am really making extra effort.

The more I ride, the more hills I find aren't really hills any more.

Riding with a bunch helps too - it's harder to slacken off with a pack around you!

But some hills remain hills. The flat section… Continue

Collision blackspot

I see in the Herald this morning that the NRMA has declared the M4 / Silverwater Road intersection the worst place for collisions in NSW (@ 135 per year - bloody carnage).

I can't help feeling a bit sad at the stupidity of this dreadful statistic. I ride through that intersection twice a day going onto and off the M4 as part of my commute for the last 2… Continue

Bike errands

Despite getting my bike back on Thursday night, events have conspired against me getting out for a decent ride. When I say "events", I mainly mean my own inability to get out of bed early over the last few days. I've been waking up, deciding "nah, I'll go out later" then when "later" rolls around I've been deciding it's too hot.

I'll ride tomorrow!

I did get out and run some errands on my other bike today though, first stop was a visit to the… Continue

All's well that ends well

I thought I'd post the ending to this unfortunate incident. My bike is fixed, the driver paid for the damage (just a front wheel and bar tape) and dropped over a nice bottle of wine as well. She has good friends that ride and felt terrible about the whole thing. We've spoken a few times and I don't harbour any bad feelings towards her at all, it was just an accident, and really, I came away with no… Continue

Curse of the shadow bike

When you work at home, bike commuting is a bit hard - the ride from the kitchen to the study is pretty short!

So my "commute" is to school, towing my son on his Shadow Bike is my regular ride. Sure, it is short at 4km return. But towing a 20kg boy and his (guess) 10kg trailer makes the short ride a non-trivial effort. Especially because he freewheels a lot.(And you should see the wear pattern on my rear tire… Continue

Coffee crawling by bike - the best.

Had a fantastic social ride with friends to various favourite cafes around eastern Sydney and the inner west on the weekend. Pretty much mirrors my week days - just diving into places while I commute around the place.

Can't go past Bourke St Bakery on (strangely enough) Bourke St Surry Hills. I hear they have a place on Broadway now too. Thier main bakery down on Gardners Rd Botany is pretty good but not nearly as hip as Bourke St. Lots of interesting bike life…

Alexandria - Parramatta Friday am

So good to commute to Parra today. Normally do 60km + ride each day but been pinned in city in the mornings so haven't put in significant kms which makes me feel like crap.

Roads are pretty slick and greasy. Recently fitted a 700 x 28 rear tyre with decent tread to my commuter hack. Makes a huge difference in the wet though is a bit slower. Fell on my arse on a round-about in Summer Hill last major rain due to using a skinny slick (pretty funny) so…

A barely satisfactory Gongride

For the last few months my deal with myself has been this: finish the Gongride on my silly old MTB in 5:30 and I get a roadie as a reward.

Well ... I finished in 6:10, only 0:35 faster than last year's wind-marred event and that on a course generally held to be about 86-88km, not the full 90km.

Long story short ... not enough training. I may have lost 20 minutes here and there to queues getting down the Mckell drive descent or waiting for the guys I was riding with. But the bottom line… Continue

DamianM vs Car

So that's my front wheel at the moment.

I was almost home after a lunchtime ride today when I came to a roundabout. As I started through the roundabout the lady to my left just started moving forwards, I yelled something, I heard a yell from the car, the next thing I knew I was knocked to the ground.

Fortunately, I am fine. The bike appears to be fine other than the front wheel, which is history. I'll get the bike checked…

Two days until the gongride and I'm a tad apprehensive, because my training has been poor for the last two months.

A combination of illness, being short of time and poor weather has meant I have only one really strong ride under my belt, a mostly flat 70km where I was pretty knackered around the 55km/3hr mark.

But then again I did do that ride on a single banana and a packet of sports gel ... which I will not do this Sunday!

I also feel like I have become a far smarter and… Continue
