Moving house and the Radish

We are moving house in two weeks time, which is very exciting. We're only moving to the next suburb, so staying in the Inner West, but to a place with a bit more space. Most excitingly, the new house has a bicycle lane right outside the front door! The down side is that it doesn't have much outdoor space, so I'm not quite sure how I'm going to store all my bikes (the current place has a decent sized shed in the garden).

Anyway, we are in the throes of packing up our stuff,… Continue

John Howard's Oak vandalised.

Eight LBUG riders rode up to Katoomba on Saturday and down on Sunday. No deaths, had a great weekend.

Can report that John Howard's oak tree at Faulconbridge in the Avenue of Prime Minister's Oaks was vandalised sometime between when we passed by on the up trip and when we went past on the down trip. Not by us!

We rode up from Emu Plains via the Knapsack Bridge cycle path (used to be the highway once) and along a path alongside the motorway to the Lapstone underpass, along… Continue

Whatever happened to the NSW Big Ride?

Will it ever be back? Meanwhile I'll be heading south this week and doing the Great Victorian Bike Ride instead.

Boycott Petroleum

I just started a new job the other day (in software) and I've since found that:
- the CEO is a cyclist and doesn't own a car.
- the head of my division is a cyclist and doesn't own a car.
- the building has a secure bike room with lift access.
- the building has showers on every floor.

To top it all off, I just saw this image on someone's office door:…

Pedestrian and bike path musings

I can't help feeling it's a sad day for pedestrians in Sydney. The traffic lights at the intersection between Kent St and Bradfield Highway are now in operation. At least in part, this junction was signalised in order to facilitate the bicycle path that has runs along Kent Street, which I suppose is to be applauded. However, the result is now that pedestrians, rather than just crossing the road whenever they need to, are forced to wait several minutes until the little green man gives… Continue

Col de Oaks & 4 Nepeans

I will never be King of the Mountains, not even Prince of the Hillocks, in fact I just don’t like hills. When I was a hiker I did not like them, when I was a cross country runner I did not like them and I still don’t. I have a bit of Scottish ancestry but they must have all been bog dwellers rather than the highland types. (never had hill problems when I did long distance swimming though)

But you can’t have pretentions to be a tourer…

Fun cycling- what was your last fun ride?

Tonight we decided that it was time to go for a ride for dinner. During the week we'd commented that we'd not ridden along the Canal Cycle path for a long time so agreed that was where we would head. A bottle of wine went into a pannier and off we headed. Given that it was approx 7pm on a Saturday evening, there were few people on the path (though unfortunately there were a few trail bikes). Once we made it to the locked gate on the path to the Prospect Reservoir, we headed back to Pemulawuy… Continue

Now THIS is a bicycle collection!

I have 7.5 bikes (one is shared)....but this is what I call a bicycle collection. I nearly just fell off my chair coming across this site and how beautiful these bikes are and well, thought I should share for those of you who also have this weird fascination with shiny pretty retro bike bits.…

Stolen stories

With all the theft stories recently, I thought I'd put write up a couple.

I've only ever had one bike stolen. It was a dual suspension Diamond back which I'd bought for $600. It was the most I'd spent on a bike (ha ha I know). It being an off road unit, it had kind of mudguards, and it got to see a lot of mud. It had been thrashed, crashed, and the bike shop mechanic had said "this thing has multiple issues." I like to hang onto things, much to the missus' annoyance, and it had to… Continue

Not the 'Gong Ride

Instead of riding to Wollongong today, starting at some ungodly early hour of the morning, I decided to go out a little later and do a short exploration of some of Sydney's newly opened cycling facilities.

Here's a few things I saw along the way.

First, North Sydney Council's idea of decoration for a shared pathway (on the path between Blues Point Rd and Mackenzie St on the way to the SHB).

An American visitor enjoys the 56… Continue

GONG RIDE 2010 - another tale of survival

Another Gong Ride under the belt. Best costume worn by somebody else - Tony Abbott budgie smugglers. Best placard - "Ride it like you stole it!" Best sight - Wollongong from the top of the Royal National Park.(It looks like it will be downhill all the way, even though it's not.) And the total distance is not 90km, but 83.32km - I have the GPS evidence. …

If you think Magpies are a menace, have a look at this.

I came home last week to find blue my knicks had been shredded while drying on the line. Completely dumbfounded by this I asked around until my riding buddy Nick suggested they'd probabably become birdfood. I'm guessing these birds are building one very well padded nest.…

My first passenger!

Well, I finally found a willing victim passenger. I was attending a work function in the city last Thursday evening, and went straight from work. As I was getting ready to go, a colleague came over and asked if I wanted to share a cab.

'A cab?' I asked. 'I'm going on my bike. And there's room for a passenger if you want a lift!'

He looked at the radish. 'Alright!' he said. 'Lets do it!'.

So he hopped on the back. Now, I don't have… Continue
