Bye for the holidays and thanks

Off to New Zealand for a couple of weeks of cycle touring in the South. Prepared for heat, snow sandflies, bikie gangs and worst of all - New Zealand drivers (having ridden motorcycles there for 10 years).

Thanks to all in our building Sydney Cyclist community for comments, thoughts, discussions an irreverent bits of cycling related detritus over the last couple of months. Look forward to the same and more next year.

How the "other half" rides

I tow my son to school on a "trailer bike" and my wife has a child seat for our daughter.

Today, the daughter decided she wanted me to ride her home.

So I cranked up the seat-post as far as I dare and went to get her.

I'm wearing tight shorts today so the geometry of woman's bike made it easier for me to mount.

And the tires of her hybrid were wonderfully slim compared to the 2 inch jobbies on my MTB.

Cycling infrastructure needed: dead cyclists not

Interesting story on the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald today about the Harbourlink proposal - building a pedestrian / cycle path from the Bridge to St Leonard's Park.

Wrong Bike

There's a brand of ... ahem ... cup supporters* called "Bike".

I've known this dimly since I played cricket.

So imagine my surprise when visiting the bicycle section at Rebel Sport today and finding the ... erm ... cup supporters there among the gel saddle covers, tubes and pedals.

My Saturday ride, hill training in Balmain

For some reason I haven't been motivated to get on the roadie much over the last few weeks. I'm not entirely sure why, it's partly to do with the accident I was in, but I think it's more to do with frustration that I lost my training momentum than fear of traffic. Riding in Callan Park

On Wednesday night I took my little boy out for a ride (we often do this, it gets us both out of the house for a while) it had been raining through the day and we were all suffering from a bit of cabin fever (I work at home).



It was decided that we would head towards the bay run, in two year old speak it translates to "go a bike ride, see some boats". Usually the bay run is a bit of an obstacle course, but with a bit of water on the ground most Sydneysiders hide indoors (or in cars)… Continue

Whacked in the face by a giant bug!

As I was riding home after dropping my son at school this morning, I saw something coming at me fast.

Before I had time to brace myself - WHACK! - it slammed into my nose and lip and then flew off.

I think it was some kind of large bug, maybe a cicada.

It didn't really hurt but I sure got a jolt of adrenaline, so much so that I hollered "What the F**K was that" rather loudly.

Thankfully I was in a lane so there was no-one around to hear that.

Bicycle Film Festival

I hope you were all able to enjoy some of the festivities over the last weekend - from the Bespoke Art Exhibition Opening on Wednesday, BikesRock! Party on Thursday, film screenings on Friday and Saturday and the fabulous Cheeky picnic on Sunday, everyone said they had a great time.

Cheeky Transport Christmas Party

We had an awesome day on Sunday at the Cheeky Transport Christmas Party. It's fantastic that such a real biking community has grown around the store. There was a beautiful feeling of family at the picnic and it was great to see a real representation of the Newtown vibe - thanks to Sol for teaching Miles how to ride his First Bike. The NSW police website reporting a fatal hit and run on a cyclist in Punchbowl. All this on the same weekend as Critical Mass, the Bike Film fest and the Track Worlds.
