Thanks to all on Sydney Cyclist for contributing to a very enjoyable year of riding in 2009.
I wish you all a Happy New Year and a 2010 full of many safe rides.
Note: read on if you wish. These are just some notes for myself to remind me of why 2009 was such a good cycling year for me and to set some personal goals for 2010.
2009, my "year of the bike"
Other than a little bit of fire trail riding in the late 80's 2009 was my first regular… Continue

Riding a cycle route through lovely English countryside, with Thomas Hardy, the Tolpuddle martyrs and Lawrence of Arabia. The "Piddle" is a stream, what else?http://richardtulloch.wordpress.com/2009/10/14/cycling-round-thomas-hardy-country-dorset/

You may remember my tiny bike
. Well, I haven't ridden it much, for perhaps obvious reasons. I did ride it to work one day with a savage hangover (somehow I thought it might be a good idea, and felt a bit shaky to be clipped in), but other than that it's mainly be sitting in the shed.
However, this evening it came into it's own, and, at least in my mind, justified its purchase. To understand this, you need to… Continue

Well this is long overdue....
Hi everyone, and Merry Christmas, I hope everyone has been having a good one!
The two months I've had since moving out of Sydney at the beginning of November has been probably the busiest time of my life. Between my main work project, a couple of others that didn't get finished up before I left sydney, recruiting, house hunting, moving, Christmas and running the website for a little boat… Continue

Vic Chesnutt, the Georgia-based singer-songwriter known for his darkly comic songs, died yesterday in Athens, Georgia, after spending several days in a coma caused by an overdose of muscle relaxers. Chesnutt, who was confined to a wheelchair after a car crash at age 18, was discovered in the late 1980s by R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, who produced his first two albums, Little and…

My computer keeps crashing so I will be brief. I would be grateful if people could consider this concept of a cycleway the length of St Johns Road - on the left side. We were sent letters by Council on 7 December, with a closing date for replies of 21 December. There is very litle specific information but my understanding now is that the footpath will be made narrow and trees removed. There will be a narrow two way bike lane and on the outside of it a concrete median strip with some parking for… Continue

Last night a crew of volunteers at the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) successfully tracked Santa over the span of 31 hours as he crossed the globe at speeds up to 2,326,413 miles per hour. Considering that the speed of sound is 768 miles per hour, it is safe to say that Santa’s sleigh is fast.
Rudolph and his fellow reindeer… Continue

It's Christmas Day and you have that last shopping itch but unfortunately most big stores are closed today.

Only thirty-seven (37) other cyclists spotted on this morning's 66 km circuit encompassing Mosman, Wakehurst Parkway, northern beaches, Church Point, McCarrs Creek Rd, Mona Vale Rd and Pacific Hwy! Most of those were between Mona Vale and Terrey Hills – the total only reached double figures at Church Point. And that includes all the little kids riding their new bikes on the footpath and locals pottering around. Probably less than a tenth of the riders usually out on a typical weekend or holiday… Continue

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone can help out...I'm planning a trip to Thailand in early April next year to cycle from Bangkok to Phuket and what I'd like to know is has anyone cycled through the guts? I've been there a few times and the roads have been pretty good but I've never traveled through the middle. I've got a Giant CRX flat-bar, which I'd like to take however I don't want to be changing tubes every 5 minutes. If it's not a suitable bike, what would be? Any info would be greatly… Continue

Just thought I would take some time out to tell you all of a fateful trip that started out as a three hour tour (not quite, a 80 minute commute). I had just gotten ready and was heading out. Each morning I have to navigate a flight of tiled steps that are usually covered in dead and dying flowers. I've always thought that one day I will slip and break something. Today was *almost* that day. As I took my first step and shifted my weight onto my right foot, out it went.… Continue

I was recently commuting to work my usual way...I have to cycle to the city so sometimes I take the footpath and sometimes the road. When coming off a footpath I always slow down and look up the street for oncoming traffic. A few weeks ago I didn't slow down in time and/or the car was going very fast and I collided. I fell hard but got up and immediately checked to see if there was any damage to the car but I didn't notice any. (there was no damage to my bike)... I have now received a phonecall… Continue

This morning I was happily riding my bike up oxford street in a colourful summer dress. I was trying to get in the right lane before Taylor square so I didn't get stranded on the left of the road. A big petrol tanker was behind me but I gave the truckie a wave and he slowed down to let me in. I continued along fitzroy street and the truckie passed me and gave me a wave. He got stuck at the red light at moore park road so I got ahead of him as I raced down the Anzac Parade bike path. He did get… Continue
