World cleat shortages and aching knees
So my knees have been aching slightly the last couple of weeks. Serve you right for riding a fixie, I hear you muttering, and indeed for a few days I did think about whether I was getting too old for all of that.
But then I remembered the thing I always seem to forget; my knees start aching when my cleats / shoes are worn out. It's when my feet are not secure in the pedals and roll around…

A tale of two drivetrains...
I finally got around to fixing the drivetrain on my fixie. I spend a few weeks ummming and ahhhing about buying the bits online and doing it myself – I even went so far as to put them all into a shopping basket on Wiggle, but never actually pressed ‘purchase’. The main reason was I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get the lockring off the the fixed sprocket. I do have the right tool, but…

Strava
So I put Strava on my phone. Strava, in case you are not acquainted with it, is an app which tracks your route, how fast you go, how long you take and so on. And then the really evil bit – it compares how fast you ride each ‘segment’ with other riders who have followed the same route (or bits of the route). If you are fast enough, you get an award, a place on the leader-board and a ‘King of the Mountain’ (KoM) badge. This has also sparked some controversy, as it may encourage people to ride…

The fixie is back!
Well, my beloved fixie has emerged from rocket surgery and is back on the road, after all the issues I had with the forks, and then various delays getting it sorted.
Thanks to the nice people at Salsa and…

A useful skill, or the mark of a shameless poseur?
I’ve been working on this for years. It’s something I wanted to be able to do – but not enough such that I went out to practise for hours until I could do it. However, I’ve been gradually getting better, and I think I am now good enough to be able announce <drumroll> that I can at last do a…

In need of attention...
It seems my idea of getting a new bike for Christmas isn’t going to happen. I took the fixie in for a service, and it seemed all is not well. I knew it would need some work; after all I ride it a lot in all weathers. However, the laundry list of things that need doing is quite long.
It needs a new drivetrain. This I was expecting; the chainwheel is four years old and the back…

get on a plane.
ok web folk. I am at a dilemma... And, I ask you this.
What bike do I take to ride in the cities of Europe?
bike 1:
fast, cool, lighter and more robust.
Easy to maintain, lock and use and pack again. Cheaper to maintain if I need to repair.
or
Bike 2:
more Fun, slower, heavier and less robust (hyd brakes)x(full rigid 29er). More expensive to maintain if I need to…

Brakeless fixie scofflaw!
Either I am going soft, or having the Radish is metamorphosing me into a full on European-style utility cyclist, as when i left work tonight it was a bit chilly in my cycling shorts and jersey, and for the first few minutes I thought longingly of how much more comfortable I would be all rugged up and riding the Radish.
However after a few minutes I warmed up and started to enjoy myself. However that enjoyment was curtailed by a slight wobbling, loose sensation on the right side of the…

Waving through the barbed wire...
On the way home on Friday, I happened to be riding across the Harbour Bridge at the same time a cruise liner was passing underneath. It was quite a sight, and along with many other cyclists I stopped to watch it go by, and wave to the passengers crowded on the deck below. Many of them waved back, and the height of…

Annual jaunt to Watson's Bay...
Well, I did make it out for a ride yesterday, and given the time of year thought I should make my annual pilgrimage to Watson's Bay on the fixie.
Amazingly this is the first recreational ride of 2010 that I have done on my own. Ive been out a handful of times with friends this year, but not on my own. Strange to…

The White Shoes
Yesterday, I bought new cycling shoes. I’ve been needing a new pair for a while; I always know when my shoes are wearing out as my right knee starts to ache sometimes on longer rides. But actually that wasn’t what tipped me over the edge; what really did that was the smell.Added by Dan on December 4, 2010 at 7:00am — 2 Comments
