Hauling kids and hauling trombone

As I detailed in another post, I recently fitted out the Radish with another child seat, to facilitate the carriage of both my kids. Whilst I’m very happy with the outcome from a kiddie transport perspective, it did raise another issue. The Yepp Maxi seat does not fit directly to the deck on the back of the bike, but to an adapter which is in turn bolted to the deck. This adapter (in…

Double trouble

What with toddler Dan pretty much graduating into 'Little Girl Dan', and Baby Dan II graduating into 'Toddler Dan II', I have been in urgent need of sorting out a transport solution for both of them. The little BoBike seat on the front is getting too small for Little Girl Dan, and so the obvious solution was to put a regular sized seat onto the back of the bike for her, and put Toddler Dan…

Strava

So I put Strava on my phone. Strava, in case you are not acquainted with it, is an app which tracks your route, how fast you go, how long you take and so on. And then the really evil bit – it compares how fast you ride each ‘segment’ with other riders who have followed the same route (or bits of the route). If you are fast enough, you get an award, a place on the leader-board and a ‘King of the Mountain’ (KoM) badge. This has also sparked some controversy, as it may encourage people to ride…

Beer delivery

Last week, Toddler Dan turned two years old, so we had a birthday party. it was huge amounts of fun; large numbers of sugared-up toddlers charging about, pushing each other over and then wailing, a ridiculously large cake with butter icing slowly going rancid in the twenty-eight degree heat, and a whole load of thoughtful presents that were mostly broken within the…

Precious cargo, pavements and cycling advocacy

Toddler Dan's first ride!

I finally got around to doing something I’d been meaning to do for months – get a child seat so I can take Toddler Dan with me on the bike. What finally prompted me to get it was necessity; it seems with the various schedules for Mrs Dan, Baby Dan II and Toddler Dan I was going to need a way to get Toddler Dan to her oh-so-middle-class-structured-playgroup thing without using the…

Mudguards, bent noodles and timpani…

At the weekend I was playing in a concert with the Lane Cove Concert Band. There was quite a lot of logistical effort involved, as I had managed to secure the use of a set of timpani (kettledrums) for the concert, but they had to be transported across Sydney to the concert venue.

Before you get too…

Getting wood on the Radish

I am very excited to announce that Baby Dan has graduated. She took her first steps a few weeks ago, and has been gradually gaining confidence walking upright since. As such, she will henceforth be known as 'Toddler Dan'.

Going along with this new found locomotion is a high degree of curiosity about…

You hit my dog!

There’s always a new experience waiting to happen when you jump on a bike and tonight was no exception. I made a last minute arrangement to meet a couple of friends for a drink, and of course jumped on the bike for the short ride down to the pub. I arrived and was looking for somewhere to lock up the bike when suddenly I… Continue

Cycling recycling

One of the things I like about the area of Sydney where I live is that rather than chuck stuff away, people leave it out on the footpath for a while first. It’s amazing how much stuff gets carted off by people to be re-used; I’ve got rid of all sorts of things this way, and its much more satisfying that putting it in the trash or taking it to the tip.

I generally…

Ice ice baby...

A couple of weekends ago it was Baby Chillikebab’s first birthday, so we had a party. We baked a stupidly big cake, which Baby Chillikebab wasn’t allowed to have.

We also supplied cold drinks to the guests (well, the adult ones at least), so in the morning I set out to get ice.

It was a very hot weekend,…

Bubble Riding

This Christmas, I asked Santa for a bubble machine. I had obviously been a good boy, as he obliged, and I was the proud recipient of an Early Learning Centre bubble-o-matic, compete with batteries and a large bottle of bubble mixture.

A quick test showed that it was capable of producing a large volume of…

Moving house and the Radish

We are moving house in two weeks time, which is very exciting. We're only moving to the next suburb, so staying in the Inner West, but to a place with a bit more space. Most excitingly, the new house has a bicycle lane right outside the front door! The down side is that it doesn't have much outdoor space, so I'm not quite sure how I'm going to store all my bikes (the current place has a decent sized shed in the garden).

Anyway, we are in the throes of packing up our stuff,… Continue

My first passenger!

Well, I finally found a willing victim passenger. I was attending a work function in the city last Thursday evening, and went straight from work. As I was getting ready to go, a colleague came over and asked if I wanted to share a cab.

'A cab?' I asked. 'I'm going on my bike. And there's room for a passenger if you want a lift!'

He looked at the radish. 'Alright!' he said. 'Lets do it!'.

So he hopped on the back. Now, I don't have… Continue

More Radish adventures

I have been ha ving some more adventures on the Radish.

On Monday I needed to drop off a six-piece vintage tea service somewhere on the way to work. So I boxed it up carefully and strapped it onto the back of the Radish, and off I went.

It was a lovely morning, and I was cruising along. It's all become much more pleasurable since I fixed the gears. You may remember I have been having lots of problems with them. Well, I discovered the cause. The gears are fine;… Continue

Radish gas!

I had occasion to add something else to the list of things I've carried on the Radish today. I needed a new gas bottle for the BBQ (and if you were wondering why I am barbecuing in the rain, it's because our oven has broken, and we've got a chicken that needs roasting), so rather than jumping in the car I took the Radish.

With the tie-down straps I got to transport the folder on the…

Bike on bike action

I went away two weekends ago weekend (I was playing at the Dubbo Jazz Festival, which was lots of fun), so went to the airport directly from work on Friday night. This meant my bike stayed in the office all weekend. I of course road to work on Monday on a different machine, and then ended up with two bikes at work.

This continued for a whole week; I rotated the bikes around (including having a fun day where I rode the fixie to work, then later in the day rode the tourer to… Continue

Riding the Radish in the Rain

On Sunday, the Radish came into it's own. Indeed, up until Sunday I had failed to appreciate the fun there is to be had on this machine; however I am now a confirmed Xtracycle fan.

It came about because we had to go and get groceries. Mrs Dan initially wanted to go, as sending me with a list wasn't god enough, as 'I wouldn't buy the things that she didn't know we needed'. Hmmmm. Mrs Dan and I have very different ideas… Continue

Sit up!

As you may have picked up elsewhere, I have bought a new bike. It was going cheap in the Dirtworks yard sale, and I just couldn't resist.

It kind of ticked a lot of boxes. For a while I had been mulling over the following things:

- getting a bike suitable for putting a baby seat on

- finding a way to transport my trombone by bike

- having a more casual, upright ride for local trips and family rides

- a grocery-getter that I could ride in regular shoes (the tourer… Continue
