Cycling in Sydney Australia

I saw this letter attached to a bicycle chained up at Redfern station this afternoon. The bicycle was parked inside the gated areas of the station (a clear no-no and incursion on RailCorp property). Personally, I think it would be great if Rail Corp provided bike parking inside their stations. Perhaps something like this:

That is really irritating. They should be providing a secure area to lock up your bike.

Rail corp is a little weird.... they used to be a client of mine when i was messengering not long ago they upped there security in the lee street office. It was kind of weird, people werent allowed to go up to Reception on the top floor of the building without a security guard escorting you.... It was a freak out thats for sure, What enemies could railcorp possibly have? They had tighter security than most prominant places including the primeministers office... I still don't understand. But that sign is not surprising....

If i try and create a reason of why they would actually care about the bike being parked there the only one i can come up with is that you can use the locked bike as a step ladder to jump the fence....? Nah? Maybe?

The reason? Perhaps it's simply that they're control-freaks who fear that if they don't Crack Down Now then things might Get Out Of Hand.

Having worked at RailCorp I know the mentaility of the people there - they're fixated on Running The Railways. The passengers are seen as an inconvenience.

What could be the reason for RailCorp's nasty notes? They don't use that fence for anything else. The fence is well away from pedestrians, and the bike isn't in anybody's way. If they let people park on the fence, they can gauge the demand for future bike lockers.

BTW, leaving Bicycle NSW in charge of maintaining bike lockers is a sure way for nothing to get donw.

The supermarket is actually level 8 of World Square so only two further down ;-)

Thanks! Maybe they should add that hint to their kind notes;)

But for all that effort I think I will pop in to a supermarket with more convenient parking for me!

World Square (cnr Goulburn, Piit, George, Liverpool) - where I work sometimes - Level 6 of the car park there is approx 15 racks, you can ride down (cra ramp) no payment required and catch the elevator up

What is the solution to making bike lockers more viable and protected against vandalism or mistaken identity?

There is absolutely no where else at Redfern to park them - how ridiculous. These notes seem to be on the rise - got one at World Square shopping center in the city the other month - provide me a rack and I will park there but if you don't your railing will have to do!

The new bus interchange at Chatswood has at least 3 racks. There would be room for up to 15 bikes, but I haven't seen anyone use thme yet.

I commute to Gosford regularly, and have seen bike racks at Wyong Station, as well as a fair few bikes ... maybe an exception? And no, I'm not on my bike up there!
