I've just spent a few days in Brisbane and have enjoyed cycling around the city. My outsider/subjective view is that the city is getting many things right in terms of cycling. There are many bike racks, tracks and lanes all across the city and the city government have strongly including cycling as part of its broader transport services. I had time to check out the King George Cycle Centre which was an impressive bike parking facility.

Queensland spends multiple times as much money on cycleways (per capita) than New South Wales. That's why Brisbane has been improving so much for cycling.

Have you tried riding from Brisbane City to Redcliffe (outer northern seaside suburb)? I haven't done it, but I want to go to Brisbane just to do it.

I forgot to mention, Brisbane City Council has maps of the cycleways HERE.

Interestingly, I lived in Brisbane last year and I had the opposite impression of Brisbane. It looks like it is quite pro cycling but they expect you to ride on the bike paths which like most bike paths don't connect. I found that riding on the roads was more dangerous then Sydney.

There is a good bike trip that you can do that goes from the city to Nundah beach (I think that's what it's called). It's about a 20km round trip.

i rode to work for a couple of years back when i lived in brisbane. mostly inner-city, but i found the bike paths to be generally pretty good, and riding on the road was pretty safe, except for one incident of extreme dickhead road-rage that landed me in court as a witness to a roadie being assaulted and run over by 2 bogans... people tended to drive slower in brisbane and generally be a little more tolerant of cyclists, imho.

Peter Beattie is a cyclist. He gave a speech once about how he almost got hit by a car driver when he and his wife were out riding. He said if the car driver realised he was the premier he probably would be dead now. Maybe these changes are a legacy of his.
