Cycling in Sydney Australia
A Sydney Ideas panel co-presented with the US Studies Centre and the Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering
City building and rebuilding has challenged many great minds in the last century. Our cities are ageing and many of the industries supporting them are shrinking or moving offshore. Tom Murphy served three terms as the mayor of 'the steel city' Pittsburgh USA, from January 1994 through December 2005, tackling the problems of rebuilding a dying city that had lost its manufacturing and industrial base. He catalysed a series of initiatives which have made Pittsburgh one of the most vibrant and liveable cities in the USA, even in the current recession. He has lessons for Sydney from Pittsburgh and from his advisory services to other cities around the world, including London, Moscow and Los Angeles.
Tom Murphy’s presentation for Sydney Ideas will focus on strategies that Sydney and other Australian cities can use to move from good to great. His presentation will be followed by a panel discussion with local experts, and an opportunity to ask questions.
Panellists:
Tom Murphy, senior resident fellow, Urban Land Institute, Washington and former mayor of Pittsburgh, USA
The Hon Patricia Forsythe, Executive Director, Sydney Business Chamber, former Member of the NSW Legislative Council and Honorary Associate of the Graduate School of Government at the University of Sydney
Edward Blakely, Honorary Professor of Urban Policy at the US Studies Centre, the University of Sydney
Julie Bindon, Urban Reform Project, The Warren Centre for Advanced Engineering
Tom Murphy is a guest of the UPE 10 International Symposium Next City: Planning for a New Energy and Carbon Future co- hosted by the United States Studies Centre and the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney. The Symposium is supported by the NSW Government Department of Trade and Investment.

Good idea, but if you want to have a forum about Industry then maybe have it somewhere a bit more appropriate like Parramatta, Silverwater, Wetherill Park or St. Mary's....and go out to these manufacturiing plants to see what is being made, plenty!
I used to work in Alexandria and even the printers are shutting down there now and moving out west!
Sorry for being a grumble-bum, but I've been working in manufacturing a little too long in this city now....
Thanks (and sorry), you are doing a great job promoting.
I might just take up that offer, I work in aformentioned Silverwater in an Industrial estate, so I might take the day off work and travel into the city.
I would love to discuss Idea's like Passive House building, Transport of course (especially PRT and cycling), and can maybe tell some stories about excatly what sort of manufacturing is going on in the Burbs of Sydney, as you may or may not know it's mostly food related these days, but there are some pockets not related to that area at all.
Cheers.
Actually, it's in the evening so (unless you work nights), no time off work required... And if you bring that perspective to the Q&A that's sure to follow the panel, I'm sure we'd all be more knowledgeable for it.
There are two of us planning/hoping to go (work-related travel schedules permitting) so discussing such ideas over dinner or drinks is entirely possible. :-)
Cool thanks. It will have to be an early mark from work.....then.
