Went to Melbourne for 4 nights and just got back. It really surprised me how well cyclists and drivers can get along… no BEEEEEEEEEPs, no "get off the fucking road"… people just went along with their own business going where they need to go.

I also noticed that there were lots of bikes and bike stands all along the main roads in Melbourne, and they have really good separated lanes for cyclists along the busier roads. A lot of the bikes had baskets and/or panniers and people rode in their normal clothes. A lot of the sporty/adventure shops sold bike panniers!

It would be great if Sydney was so cycling-friendly at the city centre

i'm going to Melbourne in April and noted with interest that the hotel we are staying at offers free hire bikes including kids trailers. When my wife asked the receptionist about where to ride she was told that there is a bike lane out the front of the hotel that takes links with a trail along the river. Thats one days entertainment for the two kids sorted.

Have a great time!

My boyfriend and I mainly went to have great food and we were not disappointed.
