Although not around Sydney, I did a fantastic 30+ km ride while visiting my parents in Bairnsdale over Christmas. I'd been thinking of doing this ride for a couple of years, and finally did it. I wish I could do it more often....See Route Description and a few photos.

Hi Rob,

Looks like prett country. The Great Vic ride went near there in 2007. The only thing to make it hard for cyclists is the occasional headwind. How were the winds when you were there?

Hi MB,

'Normal' weather pattern is reasonably calm mornings, then the winds come up around lunch time. I try and do most of my riding in the morning. Although I didn't get away until mid-morning on that day, it was pretty calm for all of the ride. I finished the ride early afternoon.
My sister and her family live the other side of town (2km off the rail trail). It's a 28km ride each way to her place, 25 km of which is on shared path/rail trail. The ride back into town can sometimes be a little slow with a good head wind in the afternoon!

Sounds a bit more predictable than when I was there in November 07. I recall riding from Meenyan to Mirboo North one morning and being blown sideways off the road twice - and the artificial leg of a recumbent rider was blown right off and up into the air.

After lunch at Mirboo North it was straight into a headwind all afternoon to Yinnar. But maybe we were just unlucky. We were, after all further west than Bairnsdale, weren't we?

If you haven't done it before, the East Gippsland Rail Trail to Orbost is well worth the trip. On one of my trips along it, I caught the train from Melbourne to Bairnsdale and rode the trail that arvo to Bruthen, and the next day to Orbost. Watch for snakes if you do it in spring or early summer. On another of my trips I rode from Mt Hotham to Bruthen and then to Orbost. I caught a V-Line bus back to Bairnsdale and train to Melbourne. Both of these were long rides through some great country.

Personally, I'm quite familiar with the East Gippsland Rail Trail (and recently joined up with the Friends of the Rail Trail)...My parents live a few kms from the start of it (via mostly shared path), and my sister lives a couple of kms off it, about 20km out of Bairnsdale. It's a very pleasant 28 km ride each way to her place. I've ridden to Nowa Nowa a few times (where it used to terminate), and to Orbost once, as part of the Bairnsdale to Bemm & Back Tour.
