Cycling in Sydney Australia
Hey all,
silly question. Ive just arrived from Melbourne and experienced but only social road rider.
I live on Redfern/Surry Hills border.
I understand there are a couple of rides e.g. Centennial Park, but is there anyway along the water I can ride that is "road cycle friendly"?
Comment by Kylie on October 30, 2012 at 12:21pm Welcome! The short answer to your question is yes. I've been away for a while so I'm not the best person to ask for route advice, but you've come to the right place.
I will be in town tomorrow. As part of a huge cleanout, I have a copy of a book about places to cycle in Sydney, which is yours if you can meet me somewhere to collect it.
Comment by Kylie on October 30, 2012 at 12:23pm Ooh I have just realised this is a blog, not a discussion - a tip for new people: blogs tend not to get much traffic on this site. They are more used for telling a story that doesn't really need a reply as such. You could make this into a discussion and probably get more people helping you out.
many thanks
Comment by Pauline Webber on November 1, 2012 at 10:35am James there are a lot of off-road paths in your area, Cooks River, San Souci and more. Get the book Kylie recommends - "Cycling Around Sydney" (am I right K?) to get you started.
Comment by Jason Brown on November 1, 2012 at 11:50am Cook's River is a good one. Can get you from Homebush down to Kyeemah and Brighton Le Sands, which in turn takes you to Taren Point, and thence to Kurnell at the tip of Botany Bay, a huge amount of which is designated and/or separated cycleway. You can get well over 100km riding it both ways
Bay Run around Iron Cove is also waterside but often frustrating because the joggers don't seem to know that there's a section for them and a section for bikes, and never the twain shall meet. And 90% of them wear ipods so bells or shouting are ineffective
Also: Olympic Park. There's some good rides through the Mangroves and around the river at Newington Armoury, as well as the hectic roadie laps. And a path from there along the river to Parramatta - which I haven't ridden yet but hear is quite good.
Comment by back street boy on November 1, 2012 at 2:45pm You can also hop on the train to Hornsby, which opens up options like Bobbin head, Galston Gorge etc.
James, our standard suite of 'Around the Bays in a Daze' 2-hour Saturday rides covers nearly all the eastern suburbs bays and beaches from Sydney Harbour to Botany Bay.
We ride from Centennial Park to either Watsons Bay & South Head or to La Perouse & Container Terminal Breakwater going clockwise one week and anti-clockwise the next time so end up with four routes that can be extended, shortened and varied however you like. It is all suitable for road bikes if you are out early but gets dangerous later when drivers start looking for parking spots for coffee or kids sports or they are admiring the views too.
There is a good variety of hills and stunning scenery. I have a lot of it recorded with GPS plots but there is no real need for a map because the water is close by.
Hey Centurion, what time do you guys go and where do you meet?
