Hi Mark... I ride form Allawah and do the cooks river ride.  Relatively safe with no issues...

Follow this from CroNulla to Marsh St
http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/LBUG-Leichhardt-to-Kurnell
Then airport Drive shared path,, branch off on Alexandra Canal path, right onto Coward St, then you have to mix it with the traffic or do a bit of footpath riding along Kent Rdto get to Gardeners Rd, cross at lights and a little more foowtpath to the start of the Bourke Rd Cycleway. Things get tricky around Green Square when the Cycleway ends but can be bypassed along Bowden and Mandible Sts. Left at Botany Rd, right at Allen St, and you can either get on to the Bourke St Cycleway or maybe go up George St to Alfred Park and Chalmers St.Whyndam St is another option, with some sneaky little detours on Garden St and the Eveleigh Business Centre to avoid traffic near Redfern, then cut across to George St. Once you are on Chalmers it is downhill onto Elizabeth St in the middle of the traffic lane or if not so confident use footpath to get past Central to Belmore Park.
