Anybody notice the ads that Google is serving up at the moment.

The full ad space taken up by the Holden fleet sales is my favourite. I wonder what they paid for that, and what keywords they are targeting. The "riding like a motorist drives" post is fun too, lots of ads for defence lawyers!

What I want to do is get rid of the Google ads and replace them with something local and relevant. I have some interest already, I have to sit down and figure out the next steps.

But ads for Holden fleet sales is just ridiculous!

I don't normally respond to ads, but I made sure I clicked through on the Holden one - the thought that Holden is paying for SydneyCyclist is very, very satisfying.

BTW, I notice that SydneyCyclist currently has 555 members, and MelbourneCyclist 333.

I got the big Holden ads on my ning site too, which is not about cycling. Maybe Holden had a bunch of ad money they decided to splurge on Australian ning sites? Or maybe across all Australian sites? It didn't seem very targeted.

Ahhh that reminds me of when we had Esso as a sponsor, it was kind of sweet except for the hippies getting anxty.
Dunhill was better tho.

I don't even notice them, but I am looking at them now. What are they reading? They know my age, my relationship status. Yikes! I use gmail when I'm away from the ranch and I reckon that reads attachments. Scary.

The cost per click by Goggle can be very low, down to a few 10s of cents per click I think. I guess advertisers use up any left over budget on things like Ning based sites. The cost compared to TV or newspaper is miniscule.

Agree the ads aren't very well targeted, have seen ads for psycologists, stretch limos, car parking etc http://www.sydneycyclist.com/forum/topics/1321712:Topic:24553

Ken Oath, be very afraid. There is a lot of internet staulking out there. My kids brought a trend home from school. You send an sms to "BONGO" and supply your name and the state you live in. Within a couple of minutes BONGO replies with some insights into who you are. Based on what BONGO supplied to my children and their friends, BONGO was hacking into msn, facebook, myspace and also into online purchases that people had made. I don't mean information that was readily available on the internet. I mean hacking or spying in some way. Needless to say, I banned my kids from using BONGO.

Dave and Tim are right. Ning hosts these ads, I can pay $25USD to get rid of them, which I will do and replace them with some ads for more bike / Sydney specific. Yes I'll make a little bit of revenue from that, I'm not planning on an early retirement yet :) I'd like to have some cash to throw at things like some Sydneycyclist jerseys or water bottles.
The traffic on this site wouldn't make doing my own google ads really worthwhile. But the tight demographic would be very appealing to a number of potential advertisers.
