Cycling in Sydney Australia
Has anyone tried these climbs? How hard were they? And where can we find anything similar in NSW? http://richardtulloch.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/australias-cycling-c...
Comment by Neil Alexander on September 20, 2012 at 6:59pm I love these videos. Gerro looks so relaxed and comfortable spinning up the hills, unlike many of his victims, er... riding partners. Even Phil Anderson was struggling on Lake Mountain.
I also love riding the Victorian Alps. The climbing is as hard as you want to make it or as easy as a low gear can make it. Falls Creek is a good climb, nominally about 31 km from Mt Beauty to the top, but there is a fair bit of descending on the climb and so some annoying climbing on the descent.
The other great climbs in the area, Mt Hotham and Mt Buffalo are also great fun with generally moderate grades. Tawonga Gap between Bright and Mt Beauty is a good warm up to all of them.
Similar climbs in NSW? Hmmm... Jindabyne to Dead Horse Gap? Any road to Cabramurra? Fitz's Hell Hill?? Nooooo!
Comment by Richard Tulloch on September 20, 2012 at 9:30pm Yes, if Phil was finding it a struggle I'm sure I would too, Neil. Those NSW rides all seem a bit far away. Victoria has the advantage there - a few great rides close together. And well done whoever made the videos - great for encouraging cycling tourism!

Comment by Neil Alexander on September 23, 2012 at 12:25pm Even if the climb of Bowen Mountain is a similar length to the Vic Alps climbs, it would be nowhere near as pleasant if you need to ride on Bell's Line of Road. And the climbs in the Illawarra, such as Jamberoo Pass particularly, are often much steeper than those around Bright and still shorter.
Unfortunately, there is nothing I know of in NSW short of the Snowys that matches up to the Vic Alps for mountain riding.
