I got yelled at this morning because apparently I "should be in the left lane".

I was a bit surprised to be yelled at because at the time:

a. I was on Enmore Rd near the intersection with King St, so there are multiple lanes (and there wasn't another car for 50m in front of the person in the lane to my left who was yelling).

b. I was going around 30 km/h and maintaining a 5-10m gap between me and the car in front of me.

c. I was about to turn right into Wilson St, as were all the other cars in the right hand lane. The person yelling at me was going straight down King.

When I looked to my left to see who was so upset with my use of the road I saw a woman who was managing to drive her car, look out her window to yell at me, smoke a cigarette and balance her pug on her lap all at the same time.

I'm definitely the one that needs some reminding about how to use the road.

You Rob, obviously. Now get off my f*%$ing road!!

(Last week I was helpfully told by a motorist going the other way, as I rode on a shared path, that I should 'get a car, ya faggot'. I'm not sure whether to cogitate deeply - 'I remind you of a small bundle of sticks? Really??' - be bemused - 'I remind you of a bloke? Righto...' - or be offended on behalf of our gay brethren who cop this sort of stuff all the time, and not as any kind of joke.)

Sorry to hear that. Clearly the driver, judging by her own behaviour, has recently done driver re-education and felt the need to share her new learnings with the world...

That's another good reason to reduce speed limits in residential areas, where pedestrians and cyclists mix with the traffic.  This way impatient drivers won't feel they have the 'right' to push others out of the way.

It would be really helpful if bicycles could have priority over cars as well.  Vulnerable road users legislation has been talked about for years.  I'd like to know what it would take to make it happen.

Driving with a pet on one's lap is illegal.

Driver to have proper control of a vehicle

A driver must not drive with a person or animal in the driver’s lap. The rider of a motorbike must not ride with an animal on the fuel tank. This does not apply to a person who travels less than 500 metres for the purposes of farming.

PENALTY: Three demerit points (four in a school zone) and a $324 fine ($405 in a school zone).
