NYPD Confiscates Bicycles On Earthday

On Earthday, April 22, 2010 police cut bike locks and confiscated dozens of bicycles, without notification, on Houston Street in NYC. No instructions were left on where the cyclists could pick up their bikes or how they could be reimbursed for the cut locks.

"We need a better plan. Cyclists should have notice regarding removal of their bicycles from the street and how to recover their bikes if confiscated", says civil rights attorney, Norman Siegel. Norman Siegel successfully litigated the Bray case that involved locks being cut by the NYPD.

In contrast to the strong support from the Department of Transportation and the community for improved bicycle infrastructure, the NYPD continues to show disrespect for the steady growth of non-polluting transportation.
